Personal Development Limits or Empowers Business Development

Running a business is tough for everyone, even those who seem the most confident and well-composed. Sometimes, it feels like no matter how hard you try, there's always something that could go better or some obvious improvement that can be made.

But have you ever thought that the key to pushing your business forward might actually be about looking inside yourself?

Every leader, including you, has their own battles and worries that can hold back their business without even realizing it. To make your business as strong as it can be, it's just as important to grow as a person as it is to check on your business's numbers and refind your biz strategy.

As you grow personally, so does your business. It's like leveling up in a video game; the more you improve yourself, the further you can go. The more limiting beliefs you defeat, the more you believe you can achieve. The more resilience to everyday annoyances or urgent issues you have, the more long-term stamina you have emotionally.

Personal Development for Parkour Business Owners

One of our all-time favorite books is "The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz which opens by creating the case for how your current mental landscape might be causing some major limitations in your life. Then the book provides four new ways of thinking about the word and offers a way to operate as a human, and he even added a fifth one later in a second book. These ideas are like superpowers for dealing with tough times and making better decisions. The concepts are as follows.

the book the four agreements can be a great place for a small business owner to begin personal development

The Five Agreements

  1. Don't Take Anything Personally Sometimes, when people say something negative, it's easy to feel hurt. But most of the time, what they say is more about them than you. For example, if a customer is upset, it might be because they're having a bad day, and not because you did something wrong. What if by them speaking about some negative experience they are having, they are actually trying to HELP you improve your business and unfortunately, you're just hearing them negatively as if they are saying something diminishing about you personally. Learning not to take things personally helps you stay calm and find solutions. Not taking things personally opens up a world of hidden choices you may not have seen if you were in a state of anger or panic.

  2. Always Do Your Best Doing your best doesn't mean being perfect all the time. Some days you'll do great, and other days might be harder. That's totally okay. What's important is that you keep trying. This attitude will help you feel better about your work and inspire your team too. Celebrate the good days and learn from the tough ones. The skill of doing your best consistently will help you develop a massive amount of trust for yourself, reassuring you that your future self will work just as hard/smart as your current self. That creates a life of abundance and can curb anxiety.

  3. Never Make Assumptions Have you ever thought you knew what someone meant, but it turned out you were wrong? It happens a lot and can cause misunderstandings. Instead of guessing, ask questions and talk things out. This is really helpful in avoiding mix-ups with your team or your customers. Make it a point to clear things up from the start. Ask clarifying questions and investigate the reasons behind what you are perceiving. This can be a major help with communicating with employees and looking into business trends.

  4. Be Impeccable with Your Word Trust is super important, and it starts with being honest and keeping your promises. Whether it's with your customers, your team, or even yourself, always try to be someone who can be relied on. If you say you'll do something, make sure you do it. Building trust takes time, but it makes everything run smoother. This goes back to being able to trust yourself. If you give your word to take action, you can rest easy knowing that future you will live with integrity and fulfill your past given word. This paired with "Always do your best" is powerful.

  5. Trust But Verify It's good to trust people, but it's also smart to double-check things to make sure everything's on track. This doesn't mean you don't trust someone. It just means you're making sure everything is as it should be. In business, this can save you from a lot of trouble. Encourage your team to ask questions and check on things too. It's all about being careful and making sure. Create a culture of accountability and train everyone around you to be impeccable with their word and to do their best always as well. Teaching people around you that you are trusting but also not afraid to verify data trains others to never try and fool you with shallow claims.

Keep Growing

Being a business owner means you've got a lot on your plate, but taking the time to work on yourself can make a huge difference. Every step you take to be a better leader and person helps your business too. Remember, it's a journey, and there's always something new to learn and ways to get better. Keep pushing forward, and you'll be amazed at how far you can go. If you feel stuck or stagnant then...
